SUN: Black Raspberry Bitters for Digestion & Slowing Down
SUN: Black Raspberry Bitters! An entirely wild-harvested blend of summer yum and bitter!
If you’re unfamiliar with bitters, they are an infusion made of mostly bitter ingredients that help with digestion. Apothecaries started making these in the 1700s and over time the cure-alls began to be used in craft cocktails as well. Bitters can be made from herbs, bark, roots, flowers, fruit, and seeds.
This formula is years in the making. There’s a special kind of feeling and connectedness that comes with ingesting what is growing right before your eyes all around you.
There’s Goldenrod, Black Walnut, and Dandelion. There’s Spruce, Pine, and Horehound. There’s Rose, Monarda, and Sumac. And these definitely give a big, bitter kick to aid in digestion! However, the balancing bit of the potion is Black Raspberry.
Picking Black Raspberries is a labor of love. There are thorns and usually some Poison Ivy around since they both like to grow on the edges in dappled sunlight. But these little berries are so worth it. I mean, just look at that color!
Magically, Black Raspberry is used here to bring balance to the bitter aid and to remind us to be patient. The berries don’t grow on first year canes, but rather need time to establish their roots. Raspberry asks us to slow down and savor all of the steps and in betweens that must occur before we bear the fruits of our work. I love this slowing down energy especially when it comes to meals and digestion and I think this correlation is really beautiful.
