An elixir is somewhere between a tincture and a syrup. The herbs are made into an alcohol-based tincture and then lightly sweetened with honey. This makes tinctures more palatable and I think a lot of fun to add to drinks for a little beverage magic.

Lemon Balm Elixir with Lemon Verbena & Lemon Zest for Litha, The Manifesting!

Lemon Balm has been used for medicine, seasoning, and magick for centuries. It’s Greek name means “honey bee” and bees do indeed love it, making it perfect for the solstice!

Lemon Balm is a member of the Peppermint family and has a flavor and scent reminiscent of both Mint and Lemon. It is a gentle nervine, meaning it supports and nourishes the central nervous system. This makes it a go-to for stress, anxiety, digestion, and sleeplessness. It is also an immune booster being anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.

Magically, Lemon Balm can be used in spells and rituals for healing and bringing calm during times of stress. It can be used to attract love, and its abundant growing makes it perfect for attracting love and success.

Amazingly, Lemon Verbena is used in similar ways for inflammation, immunity, digestion, and anxiety. Magically, it is used in protection magic, and most traditionally, in love magick and sacred rites. Lemon zest brings cleansing, protection, and joy magick along with its help with easing digestion.

Motherwort Elixir with Blackberry & Hawthorn Berry!

I started a love affair with Motherwort a few years ago and relish the moments that I get to take her. I struggled to grow Motherwort at our last home, so imagine my ecstasy when I realized that our new home and area is basically surrounded by this generous plant. It was immediately my choice for the season of Abundance.

Motherwort has been used traditionally to strengthen the heart and lower blood pressure, including those times when panic and anxiety take over our heartbeat. Being in the Mint family, it is also helpful with calming nerves and helping with digestive distress as a bitter agent.

Motherwort gets its name from its historical help in regulating the menstrual cycle (bloating, pms, cramps, irregularity), as a postpartum aid (pain, uterine toner, and lactation booster), and as a help during menopause (hot flashes and emotional swings).

Magically, Motherwort has been used for healing heartache (including pain around maternal dynamics and motherhood). It gives a more balanced outlook on life while supporting our bodies and hearts. Motherwort is often connected with immortality and longevity.

Associated with Freya, it is a protector of women and children. On a personal note, I discovered that the dried leaves smell like sitting on my Monie’s porchswing- like smoke and fresh cut grass. I’m not sure why they smell a bit smoky when dried, but even the scent heals my heart every time.

I love the pairing of Motherwort with Blackberry to add some sweet depths to this magical protector. Blackberry is traditionally associated with Lughnasadh, since it has been used to honor the Goddess and attract prosperity.

*Though, I mostly only work with tonic herbs, please do research on all your herbs before taking them as contraindications can happen on a personal level. For example, Motherwort can stimulate the uterus and should be avoided during pregnancy.
