Honeycomb Coral, aka Favosite or Charlevoix.
Honeycomb Coral lived in warm, shallow, sunlit seas 460 million years ago when Michigan sat south of the equator.
Named after their tightly-packed hexagonal tubes, Honeycomb Coral grew in colonies. This aligns them for work in building community and interconnectedness.
On a personal note, they’ve always reminded me of wings when you see them from the side, Dragonfly wings to be precise. Dragonflies spend most of their life as swimming nymphs underwater. Then when it’s time, they crawl out and open their wings. That parallel always gets me.
In some Native traditions, dragonflies symbolize illusion and transformation because of the way their wings reflect light. I like where these two concepts meet- like where our own disillusions must melt away before we can transform. Very Samhain vibes.
