Golden Milk

Back for our cream-loving holiday of Imbolc and channeling the magical milk from the Otherworld offered to the goddess Brighid, Golden Milk: to bring a little warming sunshine into the gray midwinter days.

Golden Milk, also known as haldi doodh in Hindi, is a luscious drink made from milk, Turmeric, and other warming spices like Ginger, Cinnamon, and Black Pepper.

It’s used for its anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, and relaxing effect. Often drunk before bed or when sick, I’ve found that it really warms me up in this chilly house to get moving in my day.

I’ve made this version vegan by using Coconut Milk powder, and I’ve sweetened it up a bit with Vanilla Bean and Date sugar.

Personally, I’ve mixed it with water and coconut milk, had it with Almond Milk Whipped Cream and iced. It’s been yummy every time.

The spices in this warming drink offer a lot magically. The star, Turmeric, has been used for millennia to purify. There’s a strong theme of cleansing and purifying during Imbolc that I feel resonates with Turmeric. This golden friend is also used for protection. Some cultures carry the roots or leaves as talismans, and some even add the powder to their sacred circles.

Ginger has been used to build passion, drive, and confidence. Not only does it get you up and going, it uses that heat and speed to accelerate spells with a little oomph. Cinnamon has a similar warming energy, but is also used to amplify the workings of a spell. Lastly, Black Pepper has been used the world over for cleansing. In fact, sprinkling a little Black Pepper over your candle is said to cleanse away the negativity from a space.

I’ve always believed in the health benefits of Golden Milk, but I’m now sold on the magical benefits, especially during the dark days. It’s quite a powerhouse of helpful energy before any major event or ritual.
