Calavera “Sugar Skull” Candle
Calavera “Sugar Skull” Candle
When choosing a special beeswax candle for Samhain, I was drawn to the Calavera, or sugar skull, of Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead. I love how this holiday looks at death as another sacred and inevitable part of life. How it’s a joyful celebration of lives lived and love shared.
I wanted to bring that beauty and celebration to our Samhain work through these. I love the pairing of bones and flowers. The metaphor is so powerful and the coupling, so beautiful.
I’ve topped the flowers with three powerful “dusts” for Samhain. Mugwort, Dragon’s Blood, and crossroads graveyard dirt.
Mugwort stirs visions and illuminates things that need to change. It prompts lucid dreaming and can aid in psychic workings. It’s a dark and beautiful plant that quiets the noise so we can be present for meditative and magick work.
Dragon’s Blood is such a beautiful resin. It amplifies the energy of a spell or ritual and manages to always feel like that one special thing that makes it all happen.
And lastly, there’s crossroads graveyard dust, collected next to a fairy ring and carried to our new home from our last. The cemetery sits on some of the only virgin prairie left in Illinois and was a happy place for me. Crossroads magick and dirt are used to bring something to you or to send something away. Graveyard dirt amplifies whatever intent or spell you are working with. It’s used here to draw to you the freedom of nighttime woods and the connection to ancestors.
We use these candles to honor our dead and to connect with each other in celebration that we were here with them and that we shared this life and love.
