Ancestor Jar: Thread Spools! I’ve dipped them in protective Pokeberry juice, wrapped them in protective Nettle fiber string, and layered them with magical bits: Grapevine, Sage, Anise, Amaranth, Cattail paper, and Pearl!

An ancestor jar is a way to connect and honor your passed loved ones and bloodlines. They can add power to your altars or ancestral areas, be used to call on and connect with your guides, and to bring protection into your sacred spaces.

Fill them with things that connect you to your loved one, things that remind you of them, and natural bits that can support your intent and magick, whether that be healing, connection, or protection.

For the last few years I’ve made Ancestor Jars for us and the process of creating them was intimate and powerful for me. I started to reimagine what an Ancestor Jar could be.

I thought down to the core of what it is: a container, protective, rounded, visible. And over the years, we’ve played on that foundation. We’ve done a potion bottle, a dome-covered base, a brass hoop, and a candle holder.

This year I had the idea of a wooden spool after hanging my Monie’s thread rack in the new workroom. Round and containing.

I did an intuitive pull from the apothecary to begin your layering and I’ll also be including a piece of vegan suede to hang your spool if you choose.

+ Wild Grapevine was called “blood of the earth” by Ancient Greeks. They bring positivity and have that “reaching out” energy that helps hold other bits of magic in your spells.

+ Sage, grown in my garden, of course offers sacred protection and carries our messages to our loved ones.

+ Anise, featuring that magical star, has been used since Medieval times to protect and draw good fortune.

+ Amaranth helps heal relationships and was used as an offering in ancient rituals in Central and South America, where it was believed to be brought to us from the Otherworld.

+ Cattail paper for your messages and invocations. Cattails are survivors. Because they grow right where water meets land, it became known as a liminal plant, one that lives between worlds. It is magically tied to thresholds, emotional balance, transitions, and safe passage.

+ Pearl is connected to moon magick, offering a soothing energy through transformation and healing.
